Manosque
Manosque (pop. Ca. 20.000) was founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages
it was the centre of the Knights of the Order of St.John (now the Order
of Malta).

|
In the early 1900s Manosque was the town of Jean Giono,
a renowned local author. |
The small town centre is being renovated and counts many nice seats.
Manosque is a nice town, but not very touristical: in summer it is not
much more crowded than in winter.
Surroundings
Manosque lies on the foot of the mountain ridge of the Luberon. This is
a large regional natural area. On the other side of the Durance lies the
natural area of the Verdon. The Gorges du Verdon are at an hour's
driving distance.
In the area you will find many picturesque mountain villages. The houses
on hill tops and steep slopes add to the local flavour of southern
French architecture: Cucuron, Ansouis, Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux,
Oppedette, Mirabeau, Dauphin, Lurs, Ménerbes...
The university town of Aix-en-Provence is only 50 km away, Marseille 80
km (both by highway), and Avignon 90 km. Artificial lakes offer many
recreational possibilities: Esparron-de-Verdon (20 km), Ste. Croix (55
km) and Serre-Ponçon (120 km).
